SUMMARY

The discussion centers on optimizing coffee brewing using a French Press, highlighting the importance of grind size, bean quality, and brewing time. Participants recommend using a coarse grind, ideally about one tablespoon of coffee per cup, and allowing a brew time of approximately three minutes for optimal flavor extraction. The conversation also emphasizes the significance of using high-quality beans, such as Millstone Caffe Midnight or Kona blends, and the drawbacks of mass-produced coffee brands like Starbucks, which are noted for their double roasting process that diminishes flavor.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of French Press brewing techniques
  • Knowledge of coffee bean types and their flavor profiles
  • Familiarity with coffee grind sizes and their impact on brewing
  • Awareness of coffee storage methods to maintain freshness
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the optimal grind size for French Press coffee
  • Explore different coffee bean varieties and their flavor characteristics
  • Learn about proper coffee storage techniques to preserve flavor
  • Investigate the differences between manual and electric coffee grinders

My guide to making a good cup of coffee:

"Honey, will brew some Java(as in Java the actual type of coffe not Java the generaic name for coffee)?"

"Regular or Decaf?"

"Oh, it's still early---I guess regular will do."

5 minutes later a huge cup of coffee materializes next to me. I don't see what all the fuss is about really :-p .

I'd love a coffee maker like that. Preferably one with other functions as well. I have no problem with a large investment of time and care taking either.

Yeah, that sounds like a good one. I might even tolerate the occassional weak cup of coffee as a trade-off for the convenience and other perks. :-p

Make coffee? What is this strange use of the verb "make"? In L.A. we buy coffee. It is produced by professional barristas. I would not assume that I have the skill or training to "make" coffee.

Yep, that's pretty much why we moved to Oregon. :-p

Oh, if you freeze your coffee, be sure to keep it frozen the whole time. I don't remember what happened, a storm or something, but the electricity went out, and my coffee in the freezer thawed and refroze. It had a serious mayonnaise flavor- like I stirred in a heaping glob of mayonnaise.
Also, coffee is very porous, so be sure it is kept sealed, unless you like a "everything in my freezer" aroma.

There are decent places. It's just that most people have been brain washed to believe that Starbucks is good coffee. That and telling them that a small is tall and medium is "grande". I tried very had to deactivate the brainwashing when I was working at the Natale's Coffee.
