Hydrogen Gas Remediation: Chemicals Available

Click For Summary

Discussion Overview

The discussion centers around the topic of hydrogen gas remediation, specifically exploring commercially available chemicals or methods to manage hydrogen gas released during experiments. The scope includes practical solutions and safety considerations related to hydrogen gas handling.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Technical explanation
  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant inquires about commercially available chemicals for hydrogen gas remediation.
  • Another participant suggests that free oxygen can combine with hydrogen to form water, questioning the original inquiry.
  • A request for clarification on the term "Hydrogen Gas Remediation" is made to better understand the context.
  • A participant expresses a need to remediate free hydrogen produced during experiments and suggests burning it by combining it with air.
  • One response indicates that hydrogen from electrolysis is typically managed through ventilation to keep levels below explosion limits, noting that hydrogen getters are reactive and costly.
  • A more informal approach is shared, recalling a childhood method of capturing hydrogen in a balloon and igniting it for a visual effect.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus on specific chemicals or methods for hydrogen gas remediation, and multiple viewpoints regarding handling and safety remain present.

Contextual Notes

There are limitations in the discussion regarding the definitions of hydrogen gas remediation and the specific conditions under which hydrogen is being produced, as well as the economic feasibility of proposed solutions.

Who May Find This Useful

This discussion may be of interest to individuals involved in experimental chemistry, safety management in laboratory settings, or those exploring methods for gas remediation in scientific research.

Are there any commercially available chemicals that can assist in Hydrogen Gas remediation? Thanks.

There is a free oxygen, which combined with hydrogen gives water.

Not sure what you are asking about.

Giving a definition of what you mean by "Hydrogen Gas Remediation" might help us to help you.

Thanks for the responses. I just joined and have had issues with responding. Probably Norton again. I would like to remediate free hydrogen that is given off during an experiment.

That's what I figured ... here is a solution: combine it with air and burn it.

I don't know of anything commercially available. Hydrogen from electrolysis is usually ventilated to maintain hydrogen below explosion limits. Cheap, cheap, cheap. In cases where ventilation isn't suitable, hydrogen getters can be used but they are reactive and very expensive. Here is http://sti.srs.gov/fulltext/rp2000438/rp2000438.html" based on sol-gel metal hydride granules.

Sounds expensive.

My approach as a kid was always: capture in a balloon, wait for night, light string attached to balloon, watch brief, nice show.
