AI Thread Summary
Gold Membership status can be achieved through various means beyond monetary donations, including contributions to the community or helpful actions that support Physics Forums. While the official guidelines primarily mention financial contributions, some users have received Gold Membership without making any payments. The community encourages members to engage positively, which may lead to this status as a recognition of their support. There are discussions and links available that outline alternative ways to attain Gold Membership, emphasizing community involvement. Morbert, you might like to read about what has been described for the different membership levels, in these:
https://www.physicsforums.com/threads/physics-forums-global-guidelines.414380/
https://www.physicsforums.com/threads/easy-ways-you-can-support-physics-forums.813856/

Find in the first link, a part in the first posting about Miscelleneous/Gold Members...
The second link has a section, "Upgrade to Gold Membership".

Read and think and you could know why and how you are in the Gold Membership category.

post-add: I'm reviewing through those links right now, and I only find Gold Membership officially only lists monetary contributions. Some of us have given no monetary contributions of any sort but still have been given Gold Member status. The ways to get that was described a few years ago, but the exact details, I do not remember. All I best recall is that we need to do something nice or helpful in support of Physicsforums, and show or report this, and we're given Gold Membership. This did not require spending money. Might've been just a temporary thing.

I want to thank those members who interacted with me a couple of years ago in two Optics Forum threads. They were @Drakkith, @hutchphd, @Gleb1964, and @KAHR-Alpha. I had something I wanted the scientific community to know and slipped a new idea in against the rules. Thank you also to @berkeman for suggesting paths to meet with academia. Anyway, I finally got a paper on the same matter as discussed in those forum threads, the fat lens model, got it peer-reviewed, and IJRAP...
About 20 years ago, in my mid-30s (and with a BA in economics and a master's in business), I started taking night classes in physics hoping to eventually earn the science degree I'd always wanted but never pursued. I found physics forums and used it to ask questions I was unable to get answered from my textbooks or class lectures. Unfortunately, work and life got in the way and I never got further the freshman courses. Well, here it is 20 years later. I'm in my mid-50s now, and in a...
