IBM's breakthrough chip technology lights the path to exascale computing

AI Thread Summary
IBM has made a significant advancement in chip technology by implementing optical communication on microchips through nanophotonics. However, this breakthrough does not equate to the creation of optical transistors, which are necessary for fully replacing traditional semiconductor logic. As a result, companies like Microsoft and AMD cannot fully leverage this technology to move beyond Moore's Law without the development of optical transistors. The discussion highlights the limitations of current advancements and the need for further innovations in optical computing to achieve a paradigm shift in chip technology.

Can Microsoft or AMD use this Nanophotonics chip technology? Can they say goodbye to Moore's Law after this breakthrough?

No. Not unless IBM also invents the optical transistor. IBM has only created a way of implementing optical communication on a microchip, not optically recreating the logic that semiconductors do.

thanks, do you think IBM will make optical transistors?

Thread 'Urgent: Physically repair - or bypass - power button on Asus laptop'
Asus Vivobook S14 flip. The power button is wrecked. Unable to turn it on AT ALL. We can get into how and why it got wrecked later, but suffice to say a kitchen knife was involved: These buttons do want to NOT come off, not like other lappies, where they can snap in and out. And they sure don't go back on. So, in the absence of a longer-term solution that might involve a replacement, is there any way I can activate the power button, like with a paperclip or wire or something? It looks...
