we need to find out if the function is increasing or decreasing by using the first derivative test and then setting it equal to zero, but i don't know how to get the 1st derivative of this thing ? any thoughts on that ?
 
Do you know how to compute derivatives? If you do, then you should be able to compute the derivative of 'that thing'.
 
look at product and chain rule, then everything should work out.
