Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the considerations and requirements for pursuing a career in aerospace engineering, focusing on the importance of mathematics, relevant high school courses, and college degree choices.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Homework-related

Main Points Raised

  • One participant expresses uncertainty about their math skills and asks how proficient they should be for aerospace engineering.
  • Another participant emphasizes the necessity of being very good at math, suggesting that improvement comes from practice rather than innate talent.
  • It is noted that aerospace engineering is math-intensive and requires a significant amount of mathematical knowledge.
  • There is agreement that taking physics or AP physics in high school would be beneficial for the participant's future studies.
  • Aerospace engineering is suggested as an obvious choice for a college major by one participant.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree on the importance of strong math skills and the recommendation to take physics, but there is no explicit consensus on the specific level of math proficiency required or the best preparatory courses beyond those mentioned.

Contextual Notes

Participants do not specify particular mathematical topics or courses that are essential for aerospace engineering, leaving some assumptions about the necessary background knowledge unaddressed.

Who May Find This Useful

High school students considering a career in aerospace engineering, particularly those evaluating their math skills and course selections.

Sorry if this post has been made before, I could not find it but I have an interest in becoming an aerospace engineer but I have some questions to see if it's even right for me. One question is how good at math do you recommend I be and how much math is really involved? I'm alright at math, not my strongest but I'm not horrible at it. I'm currently a junior in high school and I'm taking AP Biology this year so I'm guessing it would be a good idea to do physics or AP physics next year, right? My final question is what courses/ degree should I pursue in college? Sorry if I worded this wrong. Thanks!

Very good. But this requires training instead of raw talent. So practice until you're good at it.

and how much math is really involved?

You'll need to know a lot of math eventually. It's quite math intensive.

so I'm guessing it would be a good idea to do physics or AP physics next year, right?

Yes

My final question is what courses/ degree should I pursue in college?

Aerospace engineering such be an obvious choice for a major.

Thank you so much!

Micromass nailed it. Read his answer again and resolve to become very good at math.
