Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the competitiveness of admissions to Berkeley compared to other universities such as Yale and UCLA, focusing on undergraduate and transfer admissions. Participants explore various perspectives on the difficulty of gaining admission to these institutions.

Discussion Character

  • Debate/contested
  • Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants suggest that getting into Berkeley is challenging, particularly for engineering students, and question whether it is as competitive as UCLA or Harvard.
  • Others argue that Berkeley is not as difficult to enter as Harvard or Ivy League schools, noting that Harvard does not accept transfer students, which adds to its competitiveness.
  • One participant claims that Berkeley is more competitive than UCLA but less so than Harvard or other Ivy League institutions, especially for California residents who may find it easier to transfer from community colleges.
  • A participant mentions that an admissions officer indicated that attending a smaller college nearby could facilitate a transfer to Berkeley.
  • Another participant humorously notes that correctly spelling Berkeley's name is a tip for applicants, highlighting the importance of attention to detail in applications.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express differing views on the relative competitiveness of Berkeley compared to UCLA and Harvard, with no consensus reached on the overall difficulty of admission.

Contextual Notes

Some claims depend on the specific context of California community college transfers, and the discussion reflects varying experiences and insights regarding admissions processes.

It can't possibly be easy for most students to get into Berkley can it, the counselors at some of the 2 year colleges are giving engineering students who visit their offices the transfer requirements to apply to Berkley for admission, this was the case at 2 school's so far, but only really perhaps an Einstein of an engineering major or something along those lines could get into such a school? The counselors ask student's which school they'd like to transfer to and they have a list and Berkley and UCLA are on the list, not so much Harvard, Yale or Cal - tech is ever really on the list, is Berkley as competitive as UCLA? Is it as competitive as Harvard?

For undergrad, Berkeley is not even nearly as hard to get into as Harvard or any Ivy school plus MIT, Caltech and Stanford. Harvard doesn't accept transfer students, so transferring to Harvard is certainly very difficult. :)

Berkeley is more competitive than UCLA, but not as much as Harvard or other Ivies. However, for people in California, it becomes much easier to get into UC schools. It is not difficult to get into a UC as a transfer from a community college in California - there are programs that each UC has to let CC transfers in.

I have talked to an admissions officer in Berkeley. He told me that the easiest way to get into berkeley is attend a small college around the area and apply for a transfer later on.

One tip of getting into Berkeley is spelling their name correctly. This is not a joke as some people actually misspell the name of the university they apply to in their application...
