Discussion Overview

The discussion centers on the potential development of human-like AI, particularly the feasibility and timeline for creating machines that can perform tasks, engage in conversations, and possess self-directed goals. The scope includes theoretical predictions, personal opinions on AI capabilities, and references to futurist viewpoints.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Debate/contested
  • Meta-discussion

Main Points Raised

  • One participant expresses curiosity about the imminent arrival of AI that can function like a human without emotions, capable of learning, conversing, and making decisions based on facts.
  • Another participant suggests that such an AI would possess its own goals or purposes, rather than being solely programmed by humans.
  • A different participant asserts that the question of AI's imminent arrival has been discussed extensively and suggests searching the forum for previous discussions.
  • One participant references Ray Kurzweil's predictions about exponential growth in AI capabilities, specifically mentioning a forecast for conscious AI by 2029, citing Kurzweil's track record of accurate predictions.
  • Another participant counters that predicting breakthroughs in AI is challenging due to its unpredictable nature, comparing it to the long time it took to prove Fermat's theorem and suggesting that current AI techniques are still in early development stages.
  • This participant also critiques the term "machine learning," arguing that it is more accurately described as statistical learning and emphasizes the limitations of current AI approaches.
  • The thread is suggested to be closed due to the speculative nature of the discussion, which may lead to personal theories not suitable for the forum.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express differing views on the timeline and nature of AI development. While some reference optimistic predictions about imminent advancements, others emphasize the unpredictability and complexity of achieving human-like AI, indicating that the discussion remains unresolved.

Contextual Notes

Participants reference various predictions and theories without consensus on the feasibility or timeline for achieving human-like AI. There are also indications of differing interpretations of AI terminology and its implications.

I am wondering will there be an AI soon. I mean AI something like a machine which can actually be almost like a human without emotions. I can learn to perform task, have a conversation with you and make decisions based on fact. It can also answer human questions.

Also the I want to say the AI would have a self. It would not simply be programmed to act in certain way by a human but could have its own goals or purposes.

No.

This question has been discussed here many times. I suggest a forum search.

Sorry I will search the forum. I just watched this video by Ray Kruzweil saying that the the power of AI is increasing exponentially once a small discovery in AI is made progress in AI will increase exponentially.

Ray Kurtzweil says by 2029 we will have a conscious AI. Many of his predictions are true I mean he predicted all students would have acess to computers.

2029 is only 9 years away.

Ray is a futurist. He uses trends from existing work to predict where it will lead. AI is far more mercurial than we can imagine and its really impossible to day such a breakthrough will happen.

It took about 300 years before Fermat's theorem was proven. It could well take that long for AI.

Machine learning is popular now and is a bit of a misnomer. It's more like statistical learning. Programming wise its like building the frame of a house and letting the decorate it inside making a kind of data-driven program with limitations.

I would say we are still in the early years of development and that all our AI techniques are mere small building blocks to the eventual AGI or ASI.

Closing the thread because speculation leads to personal theories which we don’t discuss here.
