SUMMARY

The discussion centers on the work done by a stretched spring on a mass as it returns to its equilibrium position. When the spring is fully extended and begins to pull the mass back, the work performed by the spring is positive. This is because the force exerted by the spring acts in the direction of the mass's movement towards equilibrium, thereby transferring energy to the mass.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of Hooke's Law and spring mechanics
  • Basic knowledge of work and energy concepts in physics
  • Familiarity with equilibrium positions in mechanical systems
  • Ability to analyze forces acting on objects
NEXT STEPS
  • Study Hooke's Law and its applications in spring systems
  • Explore the concept of potential energy in springs
  • Learn about the work-energy theorem in physics
  • Investigate the dynamics of oscillatory motion in mechanical systems
USEFUL FOR

Students studying physics, particularly those focusing on mechanics, as well as educators looking for clear explanations of work done by springs in dynamic systems.

Homework Statement

Hi,

I am thinking about a stretched spring with a mass on it. When the spring is fully extended and has just started to pull the mass back towards the equilibrium point, is the work positive or negative?

Homework Equations

I think as the spring is pulling the mass then work is positive but I'm not sure. Thanks!
