Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around job opportunities in the USA that integrate data science with physics, particularly from the perspective of a Belgian master's student in physics and astronomy seeking to transition into data science within a scientific context.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • A participant expresses a desire to find data science roles that involve advanced mathematics and scientific applications, specifically in the USA.
  • Another participant suggests that roles in particle physics or astronomy would likely involve significant overlap with data science.
  • One participant offers to pass a resume to HR for opportunities in automotive safety engineering, specifically mentioning automotive radar.
  • A later reply indicates that the participant is unable to relocate this year but is open to opportunities in Belgium.
  • Another participant notes that the closest engineering office for the mentioned opportunities would be in Germany.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express various interests in specific fields related to data science and physics, but there is no consensus on specific job opportunities or pathways. Multiple competing views on potential job sectors remain.

Contextual Notes

Limitations include the lack of detailed information on specific job roles or companies in the USA that combine data science with physics, as well as the geographical constraints mentioned by participants.

Who May Find This Useful

Hello,

I am a Belgian master in physics and astronomy with a couple of years of working experience under his belt, who recently decided to obtain a second master in statistics. Normally I should graduate in 2020. My goal is to become a data scientist, but preferably within a scientific context. The main reason is that I want to get involved with advanced mathematics. Most engineering jobs in Belgium are pretty boring. It is mostly project management/engineering and I am honestly not interested in such jobs. I want to get involved with high end stuff and this will force me to leave the country.

What are the possibilities in the USA to combine physics with data science? If you have any information that could be of help and set me on the right track, then do leave a post here OR contact me through linkedin.

Thank you for your attention and have a nice day!

If active automotive safety engineering such as automotive radar is of interest to you, I will pass your resume on to HR.
We have offices world wide.

Basically anything in particle physics or astronomy will involve a lot of overlap with data science.

Thanks for the offer, Scott, but I won't be able to move this year. If you got an office in Belgium, you can always pass my resume.

@Reinhart The closest engineering office would be in Germany.
