KInetic Theory/Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution(Urgent Help needed!) I am posting this here because I couldn't find a more appropriate place.I request the mods to move this to a fitting place,if I made a mistake. I need to do a sort of project on the Maxwell/Boltzmann distribution of molecular velocities and its deductions, without any knowledge of statistical mechanics or quantum mechanics. As far as I have collected till now, 1.Maxwell arrived at the distribution from pure probabilities. 2.The above mentioned derivation was not rigorous,as pointed out by Boltzmann, since it doesn't take into account the collisions of molecules. So another proof was started by Maxwell and completed by Boltzmann, which is known as the Boltzmann derivation. 3.Now in the Kinetic Theory textbook by Leonhard B Loeb,he says about another very elementary and ingenious derivation by K.F.Hertzfelds,Kinetische Theorie Der Warme,Muller-Pouillets,Lehrbuch Der Physik,Vol III,Part II,Chap Ia,Sext. 7. Now my problem is,neither do I have access to the underlined text, nor do I understand German.I will be very happy if anyone of the forum members tell me something about this particular derivation,or possibly tell me a reference to some English translation of the derivation,or in the worst case give me the link to the german text. Many thanks in advance!
