Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the use of LaTeX for writing journal articles, specifically addressing issues related to file organization, package requirements, and troubleshooting compilation errors. The scope includes technical explanations and practical advice for users of LaTeX on macOS.

Discussion Character

  • Technical explanation
  • Homework-related

Main Points Raised

  • One participant, fog37, inquires whether figures must be placed in a separate folder when using LaTeX and expresses concerns about a journal article template not compiling.
  • Another participant suggests that figures can be in the same directory as the .tex file and mentions the use of the \includegraphics command to specify figure paths.
  • There is a suggestion that missing packages could be the reason for the compilation issue, with a request for the exact error message to provide better assistance.
  • A later reply emphasizes the importance of checking which packages are included in the MacTeX distribution and suggests looking for a log file to diagnose the issue.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree that missing packages may be causing the compilation issues, but there is no consensus on the exact steps to resolve the problem or the specifics of package installation on MacTeX.

Contextual Notes

Limitations include uncertainty about the specific packages required by the journal template and the process for installing additional packages on MacTeX.

I am new to Latex and looking for a specific journal article template. I am working on a mac and just downloaded the MacTeX-2017 Distribution which come with its editor.

When writing an article in Latex, do figures always need to placed in a separate folder?

The article journal template I found online does not seem to compile. Is it because I don't have required packages installed? Do all those packages need to be separately downloaded? If so, from where? Or do they already exist in the distribution?

Thanks,
fog37

Thanks. I will provide more details. But you are probably right in the fact that I am missing the packages that the template requires. I guess I have to check which packages that distribution includes or doesn't...

Try to look for a log file, i.e. a file with ending .log. Probably, in the same directory where you have your .tex file. In my case it is called article.log if the source file is article.tex.
