Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around issues related to the display of LaTeX code in the Physics Forums edit mode, specifically focusing on problems encountered during the preview of LaTeX formatting. Participants explore potential causes and solutions for the distortion of LaTeX code in the forum's interface.

Discussion Character

  • Technical explanation
  • Debate/contested
  • Meta-discussion

Main Points Raised

  • One participant reports that LaTeX code appears distorted in the preview mode, questioning the underlying cause.
  • Another participant suggests that the preview may show cached content, recommending a browser refresh to resolve the issue.
  • A third participant confirms the refresh method and expresses relief at finding a solution.
  • There is a suggestion to use a specific link for testing LaTeX, which some find useful for long equations.
  • Participants discuss the current tags for displaying MathJax formulas, noting that the 'tex' and '/tex' tags may not work as expected for some users.
  • One participant indicates that their browser (Opera) does not display MathJax formulas correctly, while it works fine in Firefox.
  • Another participant mentions that the issue with Opera has been previously discussed in another thread, but without reaching a definitive conclusion.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express varying experiences with the display of LaTeX in different browsers, indicating that there is no consensus on a single solution to the problem. Some agree on the usefulness of refreshing the browser, while others highlight ongoing issues with specific browsers.

Contextual Notes

Participants note that the display issues may depend on browser settings or caching behavior, and there are unresolved questions regarding the effectiveness of certain tags for displaying LaTeX.

Hi.

When I write my LaTeX code in this forum, it appears completely distorsionated when I click "Preview Changes" in edit mode. For example:
[tex]n^2(\rho) = n^2_0\left(1-\alpha^2\rho^2)\right)[/tex] is shown as a "z" if previously I wrote [tex]z[/tex]. In fact, I don't know if this post will be shown well.

What's happening?

Thanks.

Hi Bromio! Welcome to PF!

For some reason, in preview it shows whatever's in your cache.

Just click "Refresh" (on your browser menu), and your LateX will appear.

Thank you, tiny-tim.

I was going mad.

Prepare and test your LaTeX here:

That's useful for long equations (it avoids waiting for everyone else's posts to show up!), but if you want to check a mixture of LaTeX and ordinary typing, you do need the Refresh method.

btw, it would be useful if that page had links to LaTeX instruction pages o:)

Good point.

What's the current tag for displaying mathjax formulas? tex ... /tex does not work for me anymore.

Use tex and /tex when you want math to be displayed on a separate line, and use itex and /itex when you want math displayed within a line of text.

Thank you for your answer. In this case i did everything correct but it does not display the formulas! But just shows the forum tag code.

EDIT:
I just tried firefox, and everything is fine. That means my browser of choice - Opera - does not display the mathjax formulas anymore. Ideas?
This however works in opera: https://www.physicsforums.com/mathjax/test/preview.html
