Yo,

This past fall I took a linear algebra class. Linear algebra is not required for my major, but it looked interesting. For some reason, in this class we seemed to discuss more so the idea of vector spaces and not so much types of matrices. There is a higher level linear algebra class which talks more about this and more. Am I really missing out on a lot; should I go ahead and take that class?

That is a pretty vague course description. If I wanted to learn about types of matrices, I would just do so (wikipedia). And yes, vector spaces and maps between them are fundamental objects of study in linear algebra.
