Astrophysics Looking for an Advanced Introduction to Astrophysics text

AI Thread Summary
Steven Weinberg's new book is considered a good advanced introduction to astrophysics, especially for those with a background in quantum mechanics, quantum field theory, and general relativity. While it is dense and mathematically rigorous, it can be manageable for someone with a solid foundation in physics. The book "Lectures on Astrophysics," which was developed from Weinberg's courses, is also noted for its complexity. A review of nuclear physics may be necessary for certain topics. For a more foundational text, "Carroll and Ostlie" is recommended as a comprehensive resource in astrophysics.

I'm a physicist familiar with QM, QFT and GR etc but I've never really sat down and learned astrophysics properly. Would Steven Weinberg's new book be considered a good advanced introduction or would people recommend another text. Half tempted to get it anyway to complete the Weinberg collection.

I was lucky enough to be able to be apart of his "lectures on astrophysics" book as I attended the courses he did while making it. It is a good book but DENSE, lots of math, so I wouldn't say INTRO, but with your background you'll be fine. You might need to review some nuclear when it pops up would be my only concern.

By looking around, it seems like Dr. Hassani's books are great for studying "mathematical methods for the physicist/engineer." One is for the beginner physicist [Mathematical Methods: For Students of Physics and Related Fields] and the other is [Mathematical Physics: A Modern Introduction to Its Foundations] for the advanced undergraduate / grad student. I'm a sophomore undergrad and I have taken up the standard calculus sequence (~3sems) and ODEs. I want to self study ahead in mathematics...
