SUMMARY

The discussion centers on the optics of Luneburg lenses, specifically addressing concerns about diffraction losses and the ability to focus images. Users shared resources, including a Wikipedia link and YouTube animations, to clarify the functionality of Luneburg lenses. The consensus indicates that while diffraction and spill-over are considerations, Luneburg lenses can effectively focus images under the right conditions.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of optical principles, specifically lens design
  • Familiarity with diffraction and its effects on image quality
  • Knowledge of Luneburg lens applications in antenna technology
  • Basic skills in interpreting optical diagrams and animations
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the mathematical modeling of Luneburg lenses
  • Explore the impact of diffraction on optical systems
  • Learn about practical applications of Luneburg lenses in telecommunications
  • Investigate advanced focusing techniques using Luneburg lenses
USEFUL FOR

Optical engineers, physicists, and anyone interested in advanced lens design and applications in telecommunications and imaging systems.

Hi there!

I wonder if anyone could explain to me exactly how the optics of Luneburg lenses work? Are there any major losses due to diffraction, spill-over etc? Is it possible to focus just one image using this lens?

Thanks,

Jean

Yes, I knew that. Was just wondering whether anyone could explain it in a few simple words.

Thanks anyway though!

Jean

Hi jean ,sorting out your question, some nice pictures
