AI Thread Summary
When transitioning to a new Mac with a different operating system, Time Machine can effectively transfer most data, including user files and applications, but it may not guarantee the transfer of all installed software without their original installation media. For those applications lacking installation DVDs, third-party software solutions may be necessary for a complete migration. Regarding data transfer between Mac and PC using USB flash drives, the issue of the drive appearing empty on a PC is likely due to incompatible file systems. To resolve this, formatting the USB drive to a universally supported file system, such as exFAT, is recommended. Additionally, for backing up and cloning data, tools like Carbon Copy Cloner can create exact copies of hard drives, facilitating a smooth transition to a new machine.

Hello Forum,

I have asked several people and looked online as well on this topic. I have a mac and back all my information up using the Time Machine.

1) If I buy a new mac (new and different operating system) will I be able to transfer all the data and specifically the various computer programs that are installed on the new computer on the new computer using Time Machine? I don't have the old installation dvd for those softwares but I don't want to lose them.
If Time Machine cannot do that, I think there may be 3rd party applications that can do that.

2) I am often using external memory USB flash drives to store and transfer information. But if I saved the data on a mac and want to try to transfer it to a PC, the drive looks empty. why? Is there a way around this?

thanks,

Also, if you have an external HD as a backup you can clone your drive to your new computer using Carbon Copy Cloner. This will make an exact copy of your hard drive's contents and is an indispensable piece of software or you can connect your old Mac to your new machine in Target Disk Mode and using CCC, clone your drive to the new machine

Thread 'Urgent: Physically repair - or bypass - power button on Asus laptop'
Asus Vivobook S14 flip. The power button is wrecked. Unable to turn it on AT ALL. We can get into how and why it got wrecked later, but suffice to say a kitchen knife was involved: These buttons do want to NOT come off, not like other lappies, where they can snap in and out. And they sure don't go back on. So, in the absence of a longer-term solution that might involve a replacement, is there any way I can activate the power button, like with a paperclip or wire or something? It looks...
