Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around setting up a Local Area Network (LAN) between two laptops, focusing on various methods of connection, including direct Ethernet connections, USB, Bluetooth, and infrared. Participants explore the requirements and configurations needed for successful networking without necessarily relying on additional hardware like routers or switches.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Technical explanation
  • Debate/contested
  • Homework-related

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants suggest that a direct Ethernet connection between the two laptops is possible without a hub or switch, provided a crossover cable is used.
  • Others mention the possibility of connecting the laptops via USB, though there is uncertainty about the specific requirements for such a connection.
  • Some participants propose using Bluetooth for networking, particularly for Mac laptops, while expressing uncertainty about the feasibility on PCs.
  • A few replies emphasize that a router is not necessary for creating a LAN, as long as the laptops are configured correctly with appropriate IP addresses.
  • There are discussions about the need for a DSL modem and whether a LAN can be completely isolated from the internet, with some participants asserting that it can be done.
  • Concerns are raised about the availability of simple hubs or switches, with some participants noting difficulties in finding affordable options.
  • Technical details regarding IP configuration and the importance of setting default gateways are mentioned by participants, highlighting varying levels of expertise and understanding.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express a mix of agreement and disagreement regarding the methods and requirements for setting up a LAN. While some agree on the feasibility of direct connections using specific cables, others propose alternative methods and configurations, leading to an unresolved discussion on the best approach.

Contextual Notes

There are limitations in the discussion regarding assumptions about hardware capabilities, the necessity of specific cables, and the configurations required for successful networking. Some participants provide conflicting information about the need for additional devices like routers or modems.

Who May Find This Useful

This discussion may be useful for individuals looking to set up a simple LAN between two laptops, particularly those exploring various connection methods and configurations without relying on extensive networking equipment.

Again, my advice would be - get off the cruddy Brand X ISP and get a real Tier One provider. They will probably be less expensive, provide better service, and offer more free services.
Unless of course that real Tier one provider is going through the "lets outsource, cause it make so much financial sense" game :)

The cut and dry answer to your question is no you don't need a hub or a switch. All you need is a crossover cable like http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=9449" .

Microsoft has a lot of information about setting up a home network at http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/networking/setup/default.mspx" and if you google around for things like "connect 2 computers crossover cable" you'll get good results.
