Making a replacement Magnetic coil for my ride-on lawnmower

Click For Summary
SUMMARY

The discussion focuses on creating a replacement magnetic coil for a John Deere LX280 ride-on lawnmower, which operates at 12 volts and requires an 80-watt coil. Participants emphasize the importance of measuring wire diameter, length, and circumference of the winding, as well as reusing the old core after unwinding it. The conversation also identifies the need to clarify whether the coil engages or disengages the clutch and suggests that the equivalent part may be the Warner TG2000, priced at $130.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of electromagnetic principles
  • Knowledge of solenoid and magnetic clutch functionality
  • Experience with measuring wire dimensions and coil specifications
  • Familiarity with lawnmower models and parts compatibility
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the specifications for the Warner TG2000 electric PTO clutch
  • Learn about measuring techniques for wire diameter and coil winding
  • Investigate the differences between solenoids and magnetic clutches
  • Explore compatibility of solenoids across different lawnmower models
USEFUL FOR

This discussion is beneficial for lawnmower repair technicians, DIY enthusiasts, and anyone involved in the maintenance or replacement of lawnmower electrical components, particularly those working with John Deere models.

Welcome to PF.
You will need to measure the wire diameter and measure the length and circumference of the winding.
You could re-use the old core after unwinding and counting the number of turns on the faulty coil.

It is cast in plastic so can't really get to it

What is the electro-magnet supposed to do on the mower ?
What is make and model of your mower ?

Please drag and drop a photo.jpg of the dead solenoid onto your next post.
Post the part number and any markings on the dead solenoid.

What material is the core of the solenoid made from, solid iron or laminated ?
We will need to know approximate size.

Maybe other mowers use a similar solenoid. What other mowers look like yours?

It is for the clutch to engage. On a john deere lx280 see attached

When energized does this coil engage or disengage the clutch? Is this a multiplate clutch ? The photos are not self explanatory to my eye.

Oh is this a magnetic clutch? I was thinking solenoid.

Maybe this is equivalent to the Warner TG2000. Price is lowest I found $130.
