Master of theoretical physics in Europe: ETH vs. ENS vs. LMU

Click For Summary

Discussion Overview

The discussion centers on comparing the theoretical physics programs at ETH Zurich, Ecole Normale Superieure (ENS), and Ludwig Maximilian University (LMU). Participants express interest in various areas of theoretical physics, particularly those outside of quantum mechanics, such as complex systems, thermodynamics, and biophysics.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Debate/contested
  • Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • One participant requests elaboration on the programs at ETH, ENS, and LMU, specifically regarding their comparative strengths.
  • Another participant questions what is meant by "not-so-much-quantum" physics, suggesting general relativity as a possible focus.
  • A participant expresses interest in complex systems and thermodynamics, seeking recommendations for good programs in Europe that specialize in these areas.
  • Another participant mentions Freie Universität Berlin as having notable research in biophysics, providing a link to their research highlights.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus on the best programs or areas of focus, and multiple competing views about the importance of specific topics in theoretical physics remain evident.

Contextual Notes

Participants have not defined what constitutes the "not-so-much-quantum" part of theoretical physics, and there are unresolved questions about the specific strengths of each university's program.

Who May Find This Useful

Individuals considering graduate studies in theoretical physics, particularly those interested in complex systems, thermodynamics, and biophysics in European institutions.

Could you please elaborate on their programmes and/or how they compare against one another ?

I seem to be interested in the not-so-much-quantum part of theoretical physics, but any input will be very appreciated.

What is the not-so-much-quantum part? General relativity?

I don't know those universities, but topic you want to focus on is important for that decision.

At the moment I find complex systems and thermodynamics interesting. Biophysics seem nice too. Do you know some good places for these in Europe ?
