Maximum Acceleration of a Bullet

Click For Summary
SUMMARY

The discussion centers on the acceleration of a bullet fired from an M-24 rifle, emphasizing that the bullet accelerates throughout the length of the rifle due to expanding gases. The bullet reaches approximately the speed of sound upon exiting the barrel. The participants explore the maximum acceleration of the bullet and speculate on the shape of the acceleration graph until the bullet leaves the rifle.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of internal ballistics
  • Familiarity with the physics of projectile motion
  • Knowledge of gas expansion and pressure dynamics
  • Basic graphing skills to visualize acceleration curves
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the principles of internal ballistics in firearms
  • Study the physics of gas expansion and its effects on projectile acceleration
  • Learn how to graph acceleration versus time for projectiles
  • Explore the dynamics of sound speed in different mediums
USEFUL FOR

Ballistics engineers, physics students, firearms enthusiasts, and anyone interested in the mechanics of projectile motion.

Consider the bullet of an M-24 rifle. The explosion that takes place behind the bullet, accelerates it to approximately the speed of sound when it leaves the rifle. But I guess that the bullet accelerates for almost the entire length of the rifle, due to the expanding gases.

My question can someone estimate the maximum the acceleration of the bullet? What do you think the graph of acceleration look like till the bullet leaves the rifle?
