Measuring Temperature: Practical vs Theoretical Approaches

Click For Summary

Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around methods for measuring temperature, specifically in the context of a car bulb, without the use of a thermometer. Participants explore both practical and theoretical approaches to temperature measurement, considering different contexts and definitions.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Conceptual clarification, Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant inquires about measuring temperature without a thermometer, inviting various ideas.
  • Another participant questions the definition of a thermometer, suggesting a need for clarity in the discussion.
  • A third participant asks for the context of the original question, indicating it may relate to schoolwork.
  • A later reply introduces the concept of black body radiation and suggests considering the distinction between practical and theoretical perspectives, as well as contact versus non-contact methods.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants have not reached a consensus, as there are multiple competing views regarding the definition of temperature measurement and the context of the inquiry.

Contextual Notes

The discussion lacks clarity on specific assumptions regarding temperature measurement methods and the definitions of terms used, such as "thermometer." There is also ambiguity regarding the intended context (practical vs theoretical) and measurement approach (contact vs non-contact).

What is the context of your question? Is this for schoolwork?

Berkeman's question notwithstanding, do you know anything about black body radiation? I guess it'd probably be best to dial it back a bit and follow-up from dlgoff's question and ask if you are approaching this more from a practical or theoretical perspective, and whether or not you mean contact vs non-contact.
