Mechanical efficiency of a compressor #polytropic compression

Click For Summary
SUMMARY

The discussion focuses on calculating the mechanical efficiency of a compressor under polytropic compression conditions. Participants emphasize the necessity of knowing both power input and power output to derive mechanical efficiency accurately. Without these values, alternative methods such as using the compressor's isentropic efficiency or specific work calculations are suggested. The conversation highlights the importance of understanding the thermodynamic principles governing compressor performance.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of polytropic processes in thermodynamics
  • Familiarity with compressor performance metrics
  • Knowledge of isentropic efficiency calculations
  • Basic principles of energy conservation in mechanical systems
NEXT STEPS
  • Research methods for calculating isentropic efficiency in compressors
  • Learn about specific work calculations for polytropic compression
  • Explore thermodynamic property tables for gases
  • Study the impact of varying inlet conditions on compressor performance
USEFUL FOR

Mechanical engineers, thermodynamics students, and professionals involved in compressor design and performance analysis will benefit from this discussion.

So what do you have to start?

I have encountered a vertically oriented hydraulic cylinder that is designed to actuate and slice heavy cabling into sections with a blade. The cylinder is quite small (around 1.5 inches in diameter) and has an equally small stroke. The cylinder is single acting (i.e. it is pressurized from the bottom, and vented to atmosphere with a spring return, roughly 200lbs of force on the spring). The system operates at roughly 2500 psi. Interestingly, the cylinder has a pin that passes through its...
