Minkowski Diagram: Expanding Universe

Click For Summary
SUMMARY

The discussion clarifies that the Minkowski space diagram cannot accurately represent expanding universe models, specifically the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) spacetimes, as they are not flat. The Minkowski spacetime is strictly applicable to flat geometries, and thus cannot depict the dynamics of an expanding universe. The Milne model is suggested as a relevant alternative for visualizing such scenarios. Additionally, the conversation highlights the existence of multiple representations in curved spacetime, akin to various flat projections of the Earth's surface.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of Minkowski spacetime
  • Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) spacetimes
  • Basic concepts of curved spacetime
  • Familiarity with the Milne model
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the Milne model in detail
  • Explore the implications of Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) spacetimes
  • Learn about curved spacetime representations
  • Examine the paper by Davis and Lineweaver for visual techniques in cosmology
USEFUL FOR

Physicists, cosmologists, and students of general relativity seeking to understand the limitations of Minkowski diagrams in the context of expanding universe models.

Is this how you would draw the Minkowski space diagram with space expanding, (without acceleration or black holes) ?

There is no such thing. The "expanding space" spacetime models (the FRW spacetimes) are not flat, so they're not Minkowski spacetime. So you can't draw a Minkowski spacetime diagram of them at all.

It's reasonable to want to draw a map of a (1+1) dimensional slice of spacetime. However this isn't a Minkowski diagram unless it's Minkowski spacetime. There's also more than one way to do it in curved spacetime, much as there are multiple flat representations of the surface of the Earth. For example, see figure 1 in Davis and Lineweaver https://arxiv.org/abs/astro-ph/0310808
