SUMMARY

The discussion centers on the extended version of Volume 2 of Halliday/Resnick/Krane 4E, specifically regarding the additional modern physics material it contains. Participants express skepticism about the value of the extended edition, suggesting that it includes minimal new content. Instead, they recommend acquiring separate modern physics texts, such as those linked from Amazon, as more effective alternatives. The consensus is that the extended portion of the 3rd edition is insufficient for comprehensive learning.

PREREQUISITES
  • Familiarity with Halliday/Resnick/Krane physics textbooks
  • Understanding of modern physics concepts
  • Knowledge of alternative physics textbooks, such as Young and Freedman 11E
  • Ability to evaluate educational resources for physics
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the content differences between Halliday/Resnick/Krane 4E and its extended version
  • Explore modern physics textbooks, including the recommended titles from Amazon
  • Investigate reviews and comparisons of modern physics resources
  • Assess the effectiveness of using older editions, like Tipler, for modern physics education
USEFUL FOR

Students and educators in physics, particularly those evaluating the Halliday/Resnick/Krane series and seeking effective modern physics resources.

How much additional material is in the extended version of Volume 2--how many additional chapters on what topics? Is it worth getting an extended edition copy for the additional modern physics material if one already has the non-extended version (and Young and Freedman 11E)?

I have the extended 3rd edition and the extended portion is pretty wimpy. I agree completely with jtbell: just get a modern physics book instead. My 3rd semester physics included some modern physics and we used an old edition of Tipler that I liked:

It is dated, but can be found for cheap. Other folks probably know what books are better than Tipler.
