SUMMARY

The forum discussion focuses on calculating the heat generated from the reaction of nitrogen (N2) and hydrogen (H2) to form ammonia (NH3) using the reaction enthalpy of -46.11 kJ/mol. Given 10 moles of N2 and 35 moles of H2, with only 10% of N2 reacting, the calculation shows that 2 moles of NH3 are produced. Consequently, the total heat generated is -92.22 kJ, confirming the accuracy of the calculations presented.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of stoichiometry in chemical reactions
  • Knowledge of enthalpy changes in reactions
  • Familiarity with the concept of limiting reactants
  • Basic skills in mole-to-mole conversions
NEXT STEPS
  • Study the principles of thermodynamics related to chemical reactions
  • Learn about calculating enthalpy changes for various chemical reactions
  • Explore the concept of limiting reactants in more complex reactions
  • Investigate the applications of Hess's Law in thermochemical calculations
USEFUL FOR

Chemistry students, educators, and professionals involved in thermodynamics and reaction engineering will benefit from this discussion, particularly those focusing on heat generation in chemical reactions.

Homework Statement

Given:

(1/2) mol N2 + (3/2) mol H2 -> NH3 change in H = -46.11 kJ/mol

If the number of moles of N2 are changed to 10 and the number of moles of H2 to 35,
how much heat is generated if only 10% of the Nitrogen reacts?

The Attempt at a Solution

After setting up a ratio, I find that 10 moles of N2 can produce 20 moles of NH3. Thus, 10% of the N2 means 10% of the NH3, so 2 moles of NH3 are produced.

I multiple 2 by the original energy to achieve -92.22kJ.

Did I do this correctly?
