Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around a science photo quiz related to historical physicists, specifically focusing on the recognition of Henri Poincaré and the scoring of participants. The scope includes participant experiences with the quiz, reflections on the difficulty of questions, and the nature of Poincaré's contributions to physics and mathematics.

Discussion Character

  • Debate/contested
  • Homework-related
  • Exploratory

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants question why Poincaré is considered a historical physicist, with responses suggesting he is a prominent physicist from the past.
  • Others emphasize that Poincaré is primarily a mathematician, leading to a discussion about his dual contributions.
  • Several participants share their quiz scores, indicating varying levels of success and the subjective nature of difficulty in the quiz.
  • There is a suggestion that the quiz could be adjusted in difficulty based on participant scores, with some arguing that what is hard for one may be easy for another.
  • A participant notes that seeing file names of pictures may have influenced their quiz score, suggesting that naming conventions could affect the challenge level.
  • One participant expresses frustration about guessing correctly on certain questions, questioning the reliability of quiz outcomes.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express differing views on Poincaré's classification as a physicist versus a mathematician, indicating a lack of consensus. Additionally, there is no agreement on the overall difficulty of the quiz, as experiences vary widely among participants.

Contextual Notes

Some discussions hinge on the definitions of physicists and mathematicians, and the subjective nature of quiz difficulty is acknowledged but not resolved.

Who May Find This Useful

Individuals interested in historical figures in science, quiz design, and the interplay between physics and mathematics may find this discussion relevant.

Just mean a physicist of the past :)

Depending on how people score I'd love to do this again and either make it harder or easier.

What will be harder for some will be easier for others.

Of course, but it's possible to move the percentage chance it is more difficult.

My point was different. He is a mathematician!

Eight out of thirteen --- I cheated on Poincare.

He was both according to Wiki

9 out of 13

But it should've been 7 out of 13 because the LHC and moon questions were guesses that just so happened to be correct. Why doesn't this ever happen on real quizzes? :frown:

Only 6 correct here. None of my guesses panned out.

Brilliant, simply brilliant.

Thanks

Couldn't see the pictures, but could see the file names of the pictures. That probably made it easier to score 10/13.

Would be harder if you named the files more according to the question than according to the right answer.
