Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around a request for assistance with a calculus-related project involving an algorithm for a robotic target that must face a shooter at specific GPS coordinates. The context is an internship at a naval postgraduate school, with a looming deadline for submission.

Discussion Character

  • Homework-related
  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • A participant expresses urgency in needing an algorithm to ensure a robotic target faces a shooter based on GPS coordinates, citing job security concerns.
  • Some participants question the appropriateness of the request and suggest that the individual should not expect others to complete their work.
  • There are comments regarding the implications of the individual's lack of calculus skills and whether this should affect their job security.
  • One participant suggests that the individual could communicate their lack of calculus knowledge to their boss as a potential solution.
  • Another participant critiques the hiring process, implying that the interviewers should have assessed the candidate's qualifications more thoroughly.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally disagree on whether it is appropriate to assist the individual with their request. Some express sympathy for the situation, while others emphasize personal responsibility and the expectation of self-sufficiency in learning calculus.

Contextual Notes

The discussion reflects a mix of personal accountability and the expectations of job qualifications, with no consensus on whether the request for help is justified or appropriate.

Please Help! Need by monday

Hello, I am new to the forums and I am not good with calculus. I obtained an internship at a naval postgraduate school and need this by Monday or I am fired. I got hired for the job, but since my boss found out I'm not skilled with calculus he is riding on firing me. The project is a target the moves around a battle field. Everything else is configured except for the algorithm to make the target on the rotary platform always face the shooter at certain gps coordinates. The bearing and compass is at the front of the robot and the rotary is on the top of the rectangular robot. If anyone could PLEASE make an algorithm for me I would be very appreciative. Please, the algorithm has to make the human on the pole on top of the rotary platform always face towards some gps coordinates. The variables are H2shooter "human shooter" R2target "rotary based target".

Good luck finding a new job.

That's surely a non-traditional way to call for help...

 I didn't know there was a traditional way... what would that be?

Here's a question: do you really think this will be the only time you need to use calculus?

We won't do your work for you.

Well, This is a one time thing that was not in my job description. I really need this job.

Not our problem. Take it up with your boss. No one is going to write you a program to do your work.

Are you sure he will fire you if it's just a one time thing and it's not in your job description?? Just tell him you didn't take calculus and can't solve his problem, it'll be allright...

Either whoever interviewed you is incompetent for not asking if you were qualified in a key criterion of the job, or you have covered up your own lack of expertise at the interview.

Either way, the unfortunate consequence is that a more qualified applicant has probably missed out on the position you currently occupy.
