If the current decreases after a month or two, it might indicate that a high resistance spot is developing. At that point you can disassemble and try to determine what is happening. Also, looking at the used plate that is still working might give you a clue. Is it heating unevenly. Has its resistance changed? Do you have access to a thermal camera or IR thermometer?
