Homework Help Overview

The discussion revolves around calculating the total operating cost for a business that uses light bulbs and coffee machines over the course of a year, with a specified electricity rate.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Assumption checking

Approaches and Questions Raised

  • Participants are examining the components of the total cost, including the power consumption of light bulbs and coffee makers. There is a focus on ensuring the correct interpretation of the power ratings and their implications for the calculations.

Discussion Status

Some participants have provided feedback on the original poster's attempt, with clarifications regarding the power ratings of the coffee makers. There is an ongoing exploration of the correct values to use in the calculations, but no consensus has been reached on the final approach.

Contextual Notes

There is a noted confusion regarding the power ratings of the coffee makers, with a correction made from ohms to watts. This indicates a potential misunderstanding of the problem setup that is being addressed in the discussion.

Had a bit of a hard time with this one. Anyone mind giving it a look over?

1. Homework Statement

Find the total cost for a business that operates the following for one year. Assume that the rate is 6.4₵/kWh.
· Fifteen 100 W light bulbs for an average of eight hours a day.
· Two 15 W coffee makers connected to a 120 V power supply for two hours a day each

Homework Equations

cost = E x rate
E = pt

Ohhhh, so the cost of the lights plus the cost of the coffee. Got it! Everything else seem right?

No, I just noticed, that it was 15 W coffee makers instead of 15 ohm.

Oh jeez. Can you tell I'm tired? I just double checked the assignment, it is in fact Ohm's and the watts in the question was an error in my typing. Thanks for catching that!

Yes, 15W for a coffee maker looked too little.
