SUMMARY

The oxidation numbers for manganese (Mn) in the compounds discussed are as follows: KMnO4 has an oxidation number of +7, LiMnO2 has +1, MnO2 has +4, K2MnCl has +1, and Mn2O7 has +7. The oxidation number calculations require understanding the charges of constituent elements, particularly that potassium (K) has a +1 charge and oxygen (O) has a -2 charge. Proper computation involves balancing the total charge to zero for neutral compounds.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of oxidation numbers and their significance in chemistry
  • Familiarity with the periodic table and common oxidation states of elements
  • Basic algebra skills for balancing chemical equations
  • Knowledge of chemical nomenclature and compound structures
NEXT STEPS
  • Study the oxidation states of transition metals in various compounds
  • Learn how to balance redox reactions in acidic and basic solutions
  • Explore the role of oxidation numbers in predicting reactivity and stability of compounds
  • Investigate the properties and applications of potassium permanganate (KMnO4) in chemical reactions
USEFUL FOR

Chemistry students, educators, and professionals involved in chemical analysis or synthesis, particularly those focusing on oxidation-reduction reactions and transition metal chemistry.

determine the oxidation number for Mn in each of the following:
a) KMnO4
is the ox # -3

b) LiMnO2
is the ox # +1
c) MnO2
is the ox # +2
d)K2 MnCl
is the ox # +1
e)Mn2 O7
is the ox # -10

I need help ASAP PLEASE!

Do you know how to compute oxidation numbers in the first place? All of them are wrong. Also, oxidation numbers must have a +/- sign.

to determine the oxidation numbers you need to rewrite the compound using the charge of the atoms. For (a), the charge of K is +1, because K is in an Alkali metal and all Alkali metals are plus 1. The charge of O is -2 -- and you have 4 oxygens. The compound KMnO4 has no charge. So...

KMnO4 = (+1) + Mn + (-2)(4) = 0

Do the algebra and Mn = +7
