Physics Forums: History, Founder & Ownership

Click For Summary

Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the history, founding, and ownership of Physics Forums (PF). Participants explore various claims about its origins, relationships between key figures, and technical aspects of the forum's infrastructure.

Discussion Character

  • Debate/contested
  • Exploratory
  • Technical explanation

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants claim PF was created in 2000 by a team of psychiatrists as a psychological experiment, while others argue that it evolved from earlier online forums.
  • There are humorous assertions that PF has no founder, with claims that it has a "finder" or is owned by a dog.
  • Participants discuss the relationships between Greg and Warren, with one stating they have never met or spoken on the phone.
  • Technical discussions arise regarding the server infrastructure of PF, including bandwidth usage and server configurations.
  • Questions are raised about the first post on PF and the history of its database, with some participants expressing nostalgia for earlier versions of the forum.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus on the founding of PF, with multiple competing views presented. The discussion remains unresolved regarding the specifics of its history and ownership.

Contextual Notes

Some claims about the founding and ownership of PF are made in jest, and there are references to technical aspects that may depend on specific configurations or historical context that are not fully detailed.

Is that why I often get an error loading the page: it sights a failure to connect to the server, and it doesn't matter what browser I use.

The webserver itself is on a single computer, but the database is likely on a much more powerful computer shared by many web servers.

I actually don't know much about the site's new configuration, since it was moved just a week ago.

Right, having a web server redundacy setup would be enormously expensive.

warren, the web server and db server are on the same machine, unlike the last datacenter where the db was on a different machine.

haha I always wondered why you never had a response to that
The surprising part is that he had a post on page 1 of that thread(well that was before your post):-p

So what was the first post, the first question asked on PF?

And who was the first supermentor?

Please open the book of Genesis for us.

Not sure about the first post because we had to wipe the db in order to move and upgrade the software. The first mentor was Phobos who recently retired.

I still have one left, but that was still PF2, PF1 will be lost forever

If we didn't wipe twice we'd be over a million posts!

Ouch.

It would be nice to have this whole thing on a DVD set. There is so much valuable information here, especially in the Math and Science forums.

It was just a thread title, referring to Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory, but he used Lisa!.

I created PF and sold it to Greg for $5 and a Mars bar.

Best sale of my life.
