Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around seeking research ideas in physics for beginners, particularly from the perspective of a college student studying mechanical engineering. Participants explore the challenges of initiating independent research and the importance of mentorship in the process.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Conceptual clarification, Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant expresses a desire to engage in physics research but feels uncertain about how to start and is seeking suggestions.
  • Another participant advises discussing research ideas with a university professor, emphasizing the need for mentoring due to the individual's limited physics background.
  • A participant contemplates the idea of approaching professors with a self-initiated project, questioning whether this approach might be perceived as overly ambitious.
  • Another response supports the idea of self-initiated projects but cautions that the topic should align with the professors' areas of expertise and suggests considering available resources before proposing complex ideas.
  • A later reply expresses gratitude for the advice received.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree on the importance of mentorship and aligning research ideas with professors' expertise, while there is some debate about the appropriateness of approaching professors with self-initiated projects.

Contextual Notes

Limitations include the participant's limited physics background and the potential mismatch between their proposed ideas and the professors' research areas.

Who May Find This Useful

Hello everyone, I'm just a college guy studying mechanical engineering and I'm very much keen to do something in physics. I've done a little search about a starting point from where i could start doing some physics stuff. I've also posted here some weeks before hoping i'd get something solid. But I'm not satisfied. I can't select anything on my own. (Actually we've given with readymade assignments by the authority, our duty was just to get it done.) So please if anyone can suggest me something, please help me out. I'm a bit desperate.

This is something you should discuss with a professor at your university. Given your limited physics background, you can't jump into the most current research without significant mentoring. See if you can get a position helping out in someone's lab.

Actually i was thinking of approaching to those professors with something on my own. I mean, i want to start something of my own and then approach for help to the professors by showing what I've started. Am i acting a little oversmart?

It's a good idea, but make sure it's related to their field or they might not be able to help you with it. And think about what resources might be available before, say, coming up with an idea for CERN.

I got it. Thank you. Thank you very very much.
