Discussion Overview

The discussion focuses on recommendations for software that can plot 3D graphs and vectors, with a particular emphasis on usability and cost. Participants explore various options available for different operating systems and user preferences.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Technical explanation, Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant inquires about reliable and user-friendly software for plotting linear 3D graphs and vectors, expressing a willingness to pay for quality.
  • Another participant suggests that MAC users can utilize the built-in Grapher application.
  • A participant notes their lack of access to a Mac, indicating a need for alternatives.
  • Mathematica is recommended as a top-tier option, though it is noted to be expensive and somewhat complex to use. A participant offers to provide demos for assistance with Mathematica.
  • Microsoft Mathematics is mentioned as a free option, although its capability to plot vectors is uncertain.
  • Maxima is also suggested, which utilizes various GNU plotting software.
  • Participants mention that Matlab is a powerful tool but may exceed the user's needs, along with recommendations for online graphing tools.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants present multiple software options with varying degrees of usability and cost, indicating no consensus on a single best solution. The discussion remains open with differing opinions on the suitability of each software mentioned.

Contextual Notes

Some software options may have limitations regarding specific functionalities, such as vector plotting, and the discussion does not resolve these uncertainties.

Is there any good software which plots 3d graphs and vectors. I just want to plot linear 3d graphs and vectors in 3d. I don't mind paying for this but it should be reliable and easy to use.

Physics news on Phys.org
On MACs, there should be a decent one in Applications -> Utilities -> Grapher.

Sorry but I don't have a Mac

Depending on how much you mind paying. Mathematica is top of the line but has a hefty price tag, and can be a bit cumbersome. If you want something that is free, a little more user friendly, but much less "elegant." Winplot is good.

On a side note, many college campuses have Mathematica in certain labs, that's where I use it And if you do decide to go with mathematica and need some help operating it, let me know, and I can send you some useful demos.

Hope this helps.

I don't know if it can do vectors, but Microsoft mathematics is free now. It can do equations, inequalities, parametrics, and tables.

Also Maxima... It uses various GNU plotting software.
