SUMMARY

The discussion focuses on calculating the new volume (V2) of a gas when heated from standard temperature and pressure (STP) to 180°C while maintaining constant pressure. The relevant equation used is Charles's Law, expressed as V1/T1 = V2/T2. The user encountered a mathematical error due to not converting the temperature from Celsius to Kelvin, which is essential for accurate calculations. The correct approach requires using the absolute temperature scale.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of Charles's Law in thermodynamics
  • Knowledge of temperature conversion from Celsius to Kelvin
  • Familiarity with the concept of standard temperature and pressure (STP)
  • Basic algebra skills for solving equations
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the conversion formula from Celsius to Kelvin
  • Study the applications of Charles's Law in real-world scenarios
  • Explore examples of gas law problems involving constant pressure
  • Learn about the Ideal Gas Law and its relation to Charles's Law
USEFUL FOR

Students studying thermodynamics, physics enthusiasts, and anyone needing to solve gas law problems in chemistry or engineering contexts.

Homework Statement

A Cubic meter of a gas at STP is heated to 180 degrees celsius. The pressure acting on the gas is kept constant. What is the new volume?

Homework Equations

V1/T1=V2/T2

The Attempt at a Solution

Well, I plugged in the variables and came up with:
1/0=V2/180
Doing this though, results in a math error. Am I doing something wrong or is there another step?

Temperature should be in kelvin.
