Discussion Overview

The discussion focuses on calculating transmission loss in rack and pinion systems, exploring efficiency figures and relevant formulas. Participants are seeking to understand the performance characteristics of these systems, particularly in less-than-optimal scenarios.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Technical explanation, Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant expresses difficulty in finding formulas or general figures for transmission loss in rack and pinion systems.
  • Another participant cites a source claiming that rack and pinion systems can be up to 97% efficient.
  • A different participant questions the reliability of the 97% figure, suggesting it may be an overestimate for non-top-tier systems and expresses interest in worst-case scenario calculations.
  • One participant mentions finding references that suggest overall efficiencies for rack and pinion units average between 85-90%, but notes a lack of justification for these figures.
  • A source is provided that discusses various rack designs and their average efficiencies.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus on the efficiency figures, with some suggesting higher efficiencies while others advocate for lower estimates based on their specific contexts.

Contextual Notes

The discussion highlights limitations in available data, including missing justifications for efficiency figures and the dependence on the quality of the rack and pinion systems being considered.

I need to find out the transmission loss in rack and pinion but I can't find any formulas or some general figures...

Thanks, but i think it might be an over estimate as I won't be getting a top of the range rack and pinion.
I was hoping to use the worst case scenario for my calculations

Thanks for your help...
