Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around recommendations for a suitable Matlab book, specifically seeking a small, inexpensive paperback that serves as a quick reference guide for basic syntax and useful functions. Participants express preferences for printed materials over online resources.

Discussion Character

  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant requests recommendations for a cheap, small Matlab book that provides a quick reference rather than a comprehensive textbook.
  • Another participant suggests a specific book available on Amazon but does not confirm if it meets the request for a smaller, cheaper option.
  • A participant expresses a desire for something less expensive and considers looking for an international edition.
  • One participant argues that while online tutorials are free, printed references typically come at a cost, and they express a concern about international editions affecting authors' royalties.
  • A participant mentions their preference for a quick overview-type book due to prior experience with math programming and notes they have acquired a used copy of "Mastering Matlab."

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus on a specific book recommendation that meets the initial request for a small, inexpensive guide. There are differing opinions on the value of international editions and the necessity of printed materials versus online resources.

Contextual Notes

Some participants highlight the limitations of finding affordable printed materials and the potential trade-offs involved in choosing international editions.

Hi, can anyone recommend a good Matlab book?
Most of the books I have found on Amazon, etc. seem to be expensive textbook-type books.
I am looking for a small, cheap, paperback "quick reference guide" kind of thing, something to bring me up to speed on basic syntax and useful functions.
I want a printed book, not an online tutorial, PDF, or built-in help.

Thanks Dr. Transport. I was hoping for something smaller and cheaper, though. I guess I'll try to track down a less expensive international edition. Any other suggestions?

online tutorials are free...

nothing is cheap, if you want a reference/text it will cost a few dollars. I'm not an advocate of international editions, for the most part, they cheat the author of their rightfully earned royalties. ~$70 is nothing compared to the price of other texts out there.

I don't really need a comprehensive reference- more like a quick overview-type book, as I already have some experience with math programming. But, I picked up a used copy of Mastering Matlab and I'll see where it takes me. Thanks.
