SUMMARY

The discussion centers on the formula for reflective diffraction given by the lecturer: m λ = d (cos a - cos b), where m represents the order number, λ is the wavelength, d is the slit separation, a is the angle of incidence, and b is the angle of reflection. The participant expresses confusion regarding the derivation and justification of this formula. They reference a Wikipedia article on diffraction, suggesting that the formula simplifies to m λ = d sin θ when the incident angle is zero. This indicates a need for clarity on the relationship between the two equations.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of diffraction principles
  • Familiarity with the concepts of wavelength and slit separation

NEXT STEPS
  • Research the derivation of the reflective diffraction formula
  • Study the relationship between incident and reflected angles in optics
  • Learn about the applications of diffraction gratings in spectroscopy
  • Explore the differences between reflective and transmissive diffraction
USEFUL FOR

My lecturer has given me this formula for reflective diffraction

m landa = d (cos a - cos b)

where

m is order #
landa is wavelength
d is slit separation
a is angle of inicdence
b is angle of reflection

The problem I have is I wasn't given any justification of this and have no idea where it comes from
