SUMMARY

Major universities are actively conducting research in renewable energy, particularly solar power, despite a perception that the focus is primarily on electrical engineering (EE) degrees. Institutions such as the University of Minnesota and Cornell University are notable for their renewable energy programs. The discussion highlights the significant financial investments from companies and government facilities into solar energy research, indicating a robust job market for graduates in this field. Prospective students should consider pursuing an EE degree to enhance their opportunities in renewable energy research.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of renewable energy technologies, specifically solar power.
  • Familiarity with electrical engineering principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of university research programs in renewable energy.
  • Ability to conduct academic research and analyze energy generation data.
NEXT STEPS
  • Explore the University of Minnesota's Institute on Renewable Energy and the Environment.
  • Investigate Cornell University's Center for Applied Research in Energy Systems.
  • Research the renewable energy initiatives at Washington State University.
  • Learn about the solar energy research conducted at the University of New South Wales.
USEFUL FOR

This discussion is beneficial for prospective students, researchers, and professionals in the fields of electrical engineering, renewable energy, and environmental science, particularly those interested in solar energy research and development.

Are there any major universities doing research on renewable energy (solar power) or energy generation? It seems that many of the companies that are working on renewable energy are looking for EE degrees rather than physics degrees. Should I consider an EE degree if I want to do research in renewable energy? There are companies and government facilities pouring hundreds of millions of dollars into solar energy research, but there doesn't seem to be any university research on the topic...?

Any help would be appreciated.

Here is a quick sample of programs in reneable energy in no particular order.

Search Google with "renewable energy","university", and one could add the name of particular universities or disciplines, e.g. "mechanical engineering" or "electrical engineering".
