Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around finding resources for self-study in analytical mechanics, including online lecture series, textbooks, and homework assignments. Participants share recommendations and links to specific courses and materials suitable for different levels of study.

Discussion Character

  • Homework-related
  • Technical explanation

Main Points Raised

  • One participant expresses a desire to start studying analytical mechanics independently and seeks recommendations for online resources and textbooks.
  • Another participant suggests checking MIT's OpenCourseWare for relevant courses.
  • A participant notes that they could not find a specific course on analytical mechanics at MIT's OpenCourseWare.
  • Links to two specific MIT courses on dynamics are provided, one at the undergraduate level and one at the graduate level.
  • A participant confirms that one of the provided links was exactly what they were looking for, indicating a positive response to the suggestion.
  • Another participant recommends an attachment from a different thread that discusses the derivation of Lagrangian and Hamiltonian methods from Newton's mechanics.
  • A participant expresses gratitude for the link to the attachment, finding it helpful.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree on the usefulness of the resources shared, but there is no consensus on the availability of a specific course on analytical mechanics at MIT's OpenCourseWare.

Contextual Notes

Some participants' recommendations depend on the assumption that the resources are suitable for self-teaching, and the discussion does not resolve the completeness or appropriateness of the suggested materials.

As the spring semester is over and the summer is now beginning I was thinking that I would like to get a start on analytical mechanics on my own as a summer project. I was wondering if anyone knows an online lecture series on analytical mechanics, preferably with an assigned textbook and homeworks. At the very least can someone recommend a textbook that is well suited for self teaching.

If it is any help, I have taken and am familliar with physics 1 and 2, special relativity, "modern physics" (which is essentially rudimentry quantum mechanics) all of the standard calculus material, differential equations, linear algebra, and some modern algebra.

thank you

Have you tried checking MIT's open course ware? I find those guys usually have some good courses, especially for lower level classes.

I checked there but did not see any course on analytical mechanics

Thank you, the first link was exactly what I was looking for, I just didn't recognize it by that name

Thank you for the link, it looks really helpful
