SUMMARY

This discussion focuses on classifying various physical items into three categories: rigid bodies, systems of rigid bodies, and non-rigid bodies. The items classified as rigid bodies include the bowling ball and the baseball bat, while the system of rigid bodies comprises the system of gears, slider block system, and construction excavator's arm. Non-rigid bodies include the mechanical spring, fishing pole, and diving board. The classification is based on the definition that a rigid body does not deform under applied forces.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of rigid body mechanics
  • Familiarity with systems of rigid bodies
  • Knowledge of material deformation concepts
  • Basic physics principles regarding force and motion
NEXT STEPS
  • Study the principles of rigid body dynamics
  • Learn about the classification of mechanical systems in physics
  • Explore the concept of elasticity and material deformation
  • Investigate applications of rigid body mechanics in engineering
USEFUL FOR

Students in physics or engineering, educators teaching mechanics, and professionals involved in mechanical design and analysis will benefit from this discussion.

Rigid, Non-Rigid and System of Rigid Bodies?

Homework Statement

Classify each of the following items as a rigid body, a system of rigid bodies, or a non-rigid body: a fishing pole, a diving board, a mechanical spring, a bowling ball, a baseball bat, a system of gears, a slider block system, and a construction excavator's arm

Homework Equations

A body is considered rigid if it does not deform when a force is applied.

The Attempt at a Solution

Here's what I think:

Rigid Body:
bowling ball

System of Rigid Bodies:
System of gears, slider block system, construction excavator's arm

Non-Rigid Body:
spring, fishing pole, diving board, baseball bat

Please help me classify.

I would call the baseball bat rigid. The rest look OK.
