SUMMARY

The discussion centers around the acquisition of the Indonesian Punggur meteorite, a high iron breccia weighing 1.2g, added to a collector's collection in 2021. The collector, Roberto Vargas, is recognized for his dedication to meteorite collecting and travel to obtain new specimens. The conversation also explores the ethical implications of meteorite collection, particularly regarding environmental impact and the legality of private expeditions to Antarctica for meteorite retrieval. Participants debate the necessity of such travel and its carbon footprint compared to scientific research and tourism.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of meteorite classification and types, specifically high iron breccia.
  • Familiarity with the ethical considerations surrounding environmental conservation.
  • Knowledge of the logistics and costs associated with Antarctic travel.
  • Awareness of the role of tourism in funding environmental preservation.
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the classification and characteristics of high iron breccia meteorites.
  • Explore the legal frameworks governing meteorite collection and environmental protection in Antarctica.
  • Investigate the impact of tourism on environmental conservation efforts.
  • Learn about the scientific significance of meteorite studies and their contributions to understanding the solar system.
USEFUL FOR

Astronomy enthusiasts, meteorite collectors, environmentalists, and individuals interested in the ethical implications of scientific exploration and tourism.

Dont believe Sophiecentaur. He's trying to keep the meteorite game on lock like the drug game!

Looks like you've already posted a lot of photos:

Very cool @davenn

Yes, there are a few in that thread
The first 5 pix are of the same meteorite ( different sides)
That one is my largest acquition so far at 1.5kg, very nice meteorite out of NW Africa
A real solid chunk of stone !

There are some other varieties down the thread and in a couple of other threads
But I will do several pictures of several of the trays that hold the majority of the smaller samples
just so that you and others get an idea on how most of them are stored
