Rubber soled slippers generating static electricity

Click For Summary

Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the issue of static electricity generated by rubber-soled slippers when worn on carpets, particularly in winter conditions. Participants explore potential solutions and share personal experiences related to this phenomenon.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Technical explanation
  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant describes experiencing shocks from touching metal after wearing rubber-soled slippers on carpet, particularly in winter when humidity is low.
  • Another participant suggests that winter conditions exacerbate static buildup due to low humidity, which allows static to accumulate more than in summer.
  • Some participants propose alternatives to rubber-soled slippers, such as leather slippers or synthetic hides, and discuss the potential effectiveness of treating carpets with conductive materials.
  • There are suggestions to use antistatic sprays on slippers or carpets to mitigate static electricity issues.
  • A participant mentions the use of liquid fabric softener as a historical solution for reducing static in carpets.
  • One participant raises a hypothesis about the source of static charge, suggesting that it may be more related to rising from a chair than walking on the carpet, while another contests this view, asserting that movement across the carpet is the primary cause of static buildup.
  • Disagreement arises regarding the mechanisms of static charge accumulation, with participants challenging each other's assertions and experiences.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express differing views on the causes of static electricity buildup and the effectiveness of proposed solutions. There is no consensus on the best approach to mitigate the problem.

Contextual Notes

Participants note that the effectiveness of various solutions may depend on specific conditions, such as humidity levels and the materials used in slippers and carpets. Some suggestions remain unverified or lack detailed exploration.

Went into a similar issue. Always when wearing Polyester trousers and getting up after sitting/laying on a wooden, cotton coated bed. Then slippng into some rubber slippers and always getting zapped at the next Sink/PC/Buddy... Literally anything that is differently charged.

Personal Workaround so far...
-Take off/ exchange those trousers.
-Walk barefoot, or touch the ground (barefoot for better results) before slipping into those slippers.

Optimal solution:
Calculate and construct a antistatic wrist/ankle Band with adjustable length that will fit your local living room..
