Especially on physicsforums, I check a topic through the alerts listing, the last new post appears, and there are unread new posts; so I scroll to find them but while trying to scroll, the view keeps popping back the the latest unread posting. (The unread posting are those which when you open the topic, ther is the word "NEW" at the upper right corner of each post.)

Yes, I've had the same experience recently on some, but not all, threads with new posts.

tritto! I thought it was a problem with my browser, and therefore a problem on my end.

+1, something is wrong now and then (although my mouse scroll wheel sometimes acts strangely and I never know if it is me, or some more general problem).

edit: W10+Chrome

And me. I am unable to scroll up using the scroll wheel, but only on some threads. Scrolling down always works. Scroll wheel works properly elsewhere. The problem started a week or two ago.

ok I think I know the suspect. I added content-visibility CSS a couple weeks ago to deal with performance issues. It only renders the top 900px on page load. The alerts will jump to a post before it's rendered and thus the browser forces the user back to what is rendered. Let me think of a happy middle.

I'm struggling to reproduce this. I'm on Chrome 142 branch, Windows 11. Does this happen when logged in or out or both?
It might be or is related to the Alerts system or the Alerts listing but so much not certain. I have been logged-in when finding this scrolling problem. I must be logged-in as requirement to see the listing of Alerts. Trying to check for the scrolling problem when not logged-in is not applicable.

addition: In case it helps, I have been using Google Chrome incognito and Firefox, both up-to-date, Windows 10, "desktop" computer.

addition: Your post #11 is now published. I will let a few new posts and Alerts accumulate before I check about the scrolling trouble.

Back on and signed in, using Firefox. I see an Alert at the bell-icon. Let's see what's there and how the page behaves there.

Right-click bell icon, pick "new tab"; just the listing for "Collection of Lame Jokes". single left click...
AT THE TOP of the display is found "NEW" posts. I see more than one on the page without scrolling attempt. Can I scroll upward? Yes, and no trouble that way. Can I also scroll downward? Yes. No trouble so far.

I am guessing you gave the right or a good remedy.

Alas, my thread-views are once again popping back down as I use my mouse-wheel to scroll up (Google Chrome, Windows 10).

Maybe I noticed this too. Need to check at other times soon from now to find if it really is happening.
