Short improper integral question (how to rewrite?)

Click For Summary
SUMMARY

The discussion centers on rewriting a short improper integral using u-substitution. A participant suggested substituting x with -x, which was initially misunderstood as illegal. However, it was clarified that a proper u-substitution, where u = -x and du = -dx, is valid and necessary for solving the integral correctly. Participants emphasized the importance of adjusting the integration boundaries accordingly during this process.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of improper integrals
  • Familiarity with u-substitution in calculus
  • Knowledge of integration boundaries
  • Basic algebraic manipulation skills
NEXT STEPS
  • Study the method of u-substitution in calculus
  • Practice rewriting improper integrals with different substitutions
  • Learn about adjusting integration boundaries during substitution
  • Explore examples of improper integrals in calculus textbooks
USEFUL FOR

Students studying calculus, particularly those focusing on integration techniques, and educators looking for examples of improper integral solutions.

I'm trying to rewrite the integral as shown

Most probably a real simple answer

Thank you

In the first integral, try substituting x for -x.

I don't understand, wouldn't that be illegal to do?

Yes, it would. But Compuchip meant to do a u-substitution. u=(-x), du=(-dx).

Exactly. And don't forget the integration boundaries as well.

I have it now. Thank you
