SUMMARY

The discussion centers on whether to retake the GRE before the upcoming changes in August, particularly for applicants to physics graduate programs. The original poster scored 440 in Verbal and 730 in Quantitative, expressing concern over their performance. Participants agree that for physics, math, or chemistry graduate schools, general GRE scores are less critical compared to the subject GRE, which is essential for demonstrating subject mastery. The consensus emphasizes focusing on the Physics GRE for a stronger application.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of GRE scoring, specifically the general and subject tests.
  • Familiarity with graduate school application processes in STEM fields.
  • Knowledge of study techniques for standardized tests, including vocabulary and quantitative reasoning.
  • Awareness of upcoming changes to the GRE format and content.
NEXT STEPS
  • Research effective study strategies for the Physics GRE.
  • Explore resources for improving verbal reasoning skills for the GRE.
  • Review the latest updates on GRE format changes effective August.
  • Investigate the importance of other application components beyond GRE scores for physics graduate programs.
USEFUL FOR

Prospective physics graduate students, academic advisors, and anyone preparing for the GRE seeking to optimize their application strategy.

Verbal: 440
Quantitative: 730

I registered for the exam a month ago and intended to study for it (books, vocabulary flash cards, etc), but didn't spend as much time as I intended and did horribly on verbal (quant. isn't so hot, either).

Should I retake it again before they change it this August?

What is your subject field? If you are planning to go to a grad school in math, physics, or possibly chemistry, your general GRE scores don't matter that much as long as the rest of your application looks good; general GRE is more of a formality in these subjects.

Different story for the subject GRE though; that's the exam that you actually want to do well.

See post #8 on here (if you are planning to go to a grad school in physics): https://www.physicsforums.com/showthread.php?t=284463&highlight=Physics+Grad+School

I plan on going to grad school for physics. Thanks for your input and the link. It was very informative.
I hope to take the Physics GRE later this year or next year.
