SUMMARY

The discussion focuses on finding a simple, reliable transmitter-receiver device for a 5-year-old child to alert a parent when leaving the classroom, avoiding delays and dependency on smartphones or Bluetooth. Samsung SmartTag2 was tested but proved unreliable due to its dependence on other smartphones nearby to relay signals. Alternatives suggested include restaurant pager systems, portable caregiver pagers, and 2-way intercoms with ranges up to 3300 ft, though building obstructions may reduce effectiveness. A 4G/LTE SOS panic button with SIM card capability for direct calls was proposed as a more dependable solution without SMS delays. The main challenge is a compact transmitter with a single button suitable for young children and reliable signal transmission through school infrastructure.

PREREQUISITES

  • Understanding of radio frequency (RF) communication and signal range limitations
  • Knowledge of Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) device operation, specifically Samsung SmartTag2
  • Familiarity with commercial pager systems and their transmitter-receiver configurations
  • Basic awareness of cellular 4G/LTE communication and SIM-enabled SOS devices

NEXT STEPS

  • Research compact single-button RF transmitters with dedicated receivers designed for child use
  • Evaluate restaurant pager systems for signal reliability and ease of use in school environments
  • Investigate 4G/LTE SOS panic buttons with voice call functionality and SIM card integration
  • Test RF device signal penetration in school buildings to assess real-world range and obstacles

USEFUL FOR

Parents of young children, school administrators, caregivers, and product developers seeking reliable, low-latency alert systems for child safety without reliance on smartphones or complex devices.

Hi,

I have a 5 year old child in school. My car needs to go inside school compound precisely when they come out of classroom so I don't have to circle for 30 minutes. The dismissal time can be off by 5 to 10 minutes. I have tried letting him use the Samsung Smarttag where he presses the button when coming out of classroom (they are held in one place inside). But my Smartphone doesn't always receive the Smart Tag signal which needs other smartphone in the vicinity.

I need a simple device based on radio waves only (not wifi or bluetooth or needing other smartphones). So when he pressed it, my device would alert instantly (no delays). Walkie talkie is so big. I just need a simple button. Please give suggestion of ready made devices. Thank you.

Ask the teacher/supervisor to enable a smartphone, so other children can use the same Samsung Smarttag2 system reliably.

5 year old students are not allowed smartphones in class. And the teacher is so busy to operate the transmitter. Because during dismissal. The teacher is busy lining up 20 students to go to waiting area. The kid can easily press the button. Maybe the Restaurant alert device will work. I'll look into it.

If others have other idea. Maybe another alternative for the restaurant alert system (which has 4 receivers and I need only one). Please let me know. Thanks.

Oh. Problem for restaurant pager is the transmitter is so big and has many buttons and numbers (see below). I just need a transmitter with one button only.

Then the teacher's smartphone needs to be turned on, to relay a student's Samsung Smarttag2 message to their parents phone. Does the teacher not have a phone that can be enabled and turned on?

IMO, most things like that are very optimistic about their range and can only come close if there are no walls in between. A signal from inside a school building might not get out.

Does anyone know of a 4G/LTE sos/panic button, one where you can insert a simm and put the number where it can call when a button is pushed? Not just SMS but call because SMS has delays. There is a fence and a small building in the path which can block any wireless bell unit or even wireless income I nearly bought.
