Strength of hyrdrogen charges between ethanol and water

Click For Summary
SUMMARY

The discussion centers on the comparative positivity of hydrogen atoms in ethanol versus water molecules. Participants agree that the hydrogen atom in water is more positively charged due to the higher electronegativity of oxygen compared to carbon in ethanol. The conversation highlights the importance of defining boundaries between atoms when discussing charge properties, emphasizing that the context of molecular structure significantly influences these characteristics.

PREREQUISITES
  • Chemical bonding principles
  • Electronegativity concepts
  • Molecular structure analysis

Is a hydrogen on an ethanol more or less positive than on a water molecule. I think the hydrogen is more positive on a water molecule, but I still don't understand why?

Could someone help me figure this out... please and thank you

That's not a too well defined property as it depends on where you draw the boundary between the hydrogen atom and the oxygen atom.
