The diameter of the exhaust nozzle of jet engines

Click For Summary

Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the typical diameter of the exhaust nozzle of jet engines, specifically focusing on turbofan engines. Participants explore variations in nozzle sizes due to different engine types and design considerations.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Technical explanation, Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant inquires about the typical diameter of turbofan engine nozzles, acknowledging the variability among different engine types.
  • Another participant provides an estimate based on visual assessment, suggesting that the JT9D engine's nozzle diameter is around 1 meter.
  • A third participant references a Wikipedia article for additional information, indicating that there may be more comprehensive data available.
  • A later reply emphasizes that nozzle diameter is influenced by design thrust, suggesting that there is no single typical size.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus on a specific diameter, and multiple viewpoints regarding the variability of nozzle sizes remain present.

Contextual Notes

Participants note that the diameter may depend on various factors, including engine design and thrust requirements, but do not provide specific definitions or parameters for these factors.

Hello,

Can anybody please tell me the typical diameter of the exhaust nozzle of a jet engine? I know, there are different types of engines and nozzle types also vary. For instance, I am interested to know the typical diameter of the nozzle of a turbofan engine.

Thanks

That's a pretty vague question. However, a bit of Google searching found the JT9D engine used on some Airbus models has a nozzle diameter (judged by eye from a picture) around 1 meter.

I would think it should be obvious that among other things the diameter will be a function of design thrust. So there is no one typical size.
