Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the significance of cell phone model numbers, exploring whether they hold any special meaning or are merely identifiers assigned by manufacturers. Participants reference specific models and their classifications.

Discussion Character

  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants suggest that model numbers are simply identifiers for stock purposes without any inherent significance.
  • Others mention specific examples, such as the Sony Ericsson models 290a and 290b, indicating variations in color.
  • A participant notes Nokia's classification system, suggesting that different series (e.g., 3000, 5000, 6000) correspond to different types of phones, although this is presented as a recollection rather than a definitive statement.
  • There is a query about whether the model numbers have any technical meaning, indicating uncertainty among participants.
  • Another participant reiterates the question about the technical meaning of model numbers, seeking clarification.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus on the significance of model numbers, with some asserting they are purely for identification while others suggest potential classifications or meanings.

Contextual Notes

Some claims rely on personal recollections or assumptions about manufacturer practices, and there is a lack of detailed definitions regarding the classification systems mentioned.

What does the model number of a cell phone stand for? Does it have a special significance? eg: nokia 3310 or sony k300i?

It is just the model number assigned to it by the manufacturer, it has no purpose other than being the name of the phone for stock identification.

My Sony Ericsson comes in two colours: white and black. There are two models: 290a and 290b.

Nokia have a system splitting each millennium of phone into a classification. Off the top of my head, 3000 series are budget personal phones, 5000 series are outdoorsy durable phones, 6000 are business phones. Something like that anyway, look on their website.

so you guys sure the numbers do not have any technical meaning?
